Be sure to hydrate. When people come in for an hour-long session, even after that hour I gave them Reiki, it's not that everything just stops. All the energy that they receive is continuing to filter through and work through their system. I'm always telling my clients, “Make sure you drink a lot of water today. The Reiki is going to continue to be moving through your system and the water will help things move and flush.” Also for yourself, because when you're giving Reiki, you're getting Reiki, it's good to make sure you're really hydrating yourself and drink a lot of water to help the flow.

This next one is: Get comfortable. If you're uncomfortable, the energy doesn't flow well. Remember, the giver and receiver are two parts of the flow. It's just as important that you (the giver) is comfortable as the receiver because you're co-creating together. We're not being martyred healers. We're not making ourselves uncomfortable to benefit the other person. No, it's nice because Reiki is win-win and a lot of things aren't. There is this old idea that we have to sacrifice ourselves for the benefit of others.

But what's nice with Reiki is we don't have to sacrifice. It's good for the giver and the receiver, and we both benefit from it. Remember the energy's going to go wherever it needs to go anyway, so you don't have to contort your body to try to reach some spot of the person. You could stay at one spot the whole time, like the head, and again, if the ankles need it, it'll go to the ankles. It's always just as important that you're comfortable as it is that the receiver is comfortable.

The next one says: Follow your intuition. If you feel connected to your intuition, you can let your intuition guide you as far as how long you stay in one spot. If you feel the energy flowing a lot, you stay there long. And then if you feel it subside, you can move to the next spot. It's nice because it's really, really foolproof. If you're somebody who's already connected to your intuition or maybe what I'm saying is actually this is like following the feeling.

Your intuition would be more like you're here and then suddenly you get this intuitive idea, Oh, it's time to move on. Not necessarily from the feeling, but just inwardly you get this sense of I think I'll go here, or I think it's time to move on. So really there's maybe three ways:

1) You could just follow the hand positions that we'll look at in a little bit for one to three minutes in each one. If you're not very sure or trusting of these other senses, you could just do that and that's perfectly fine. Or 2) you might feel or sense things a lot and you follow that sensing feeling. Or 3) maybe you just follow your intuition. You get an inner message like, Move here, time to move there. Any of these ways works, there's no wrong way. As long as you're not inappropriately touching the person, basically it'll be okay.

And that's what's really nice about Reiki: Reiki is the healer. You can trust Reiki. You don't have to figure it all out and it's such a relief! It makes it very enjoyable to give Reiki without that part of us that's always like, Oh my God, am I doing it right? I'm not doing it right. All of that can step aside because you're not doing anything. Reiki is doing it all, and you're just being, allowing and trusting. It's moving through you and it's doing what it needs to do. That's this last part: Know that you can't do it wrong. The energy will naturally go wherever it needs to.
